04.09.15 From Digital Dictation to Voice Recognition - a new way of working at Kingsbury Court Surgery

In a move driven by increasing patient numbers and subsequent demand for health services, the team at Kingsbury Court Surgery, Bedfordshire, has recently transitioned from TalkingPoint Digital Dictation to TalkingPoint’s Speech Recognition solution for General Practice.

Kingsbury Court Surgery provides a wide range of personal medical and health promotion services in Dunstable, Bedfordshire to over 8000 patients. The practice currently has 6 GPs.

Already experienced users of TalkingPoint’s Digital Dictation solution, the practice chose to move to TalkingPoint's Voice Recognition software suite in February. Debbie Wilkins, Practice Manager, explains the rationale behind the change. “By moving to TalkingPoint’s speech solution, coupled with a recent upgrade of our clinical software, we are now equipped with the tools we need to cope with our increasing workload.”

With 2 GPs still using Digital Dictation and 4 using Speech Recognition, the practice has benefitted from TalkingPoint’s new secretarial desktop that amalgamates both Digital Dictation sound files and Speech Recognition text packets in one place, enabling the secretarial team to instantly see the most urgent letters requiring attention from across the whole clinical team.

TalkingPoint for GPs enables users to simply and quickly create clinical notes, patient records and referral letters directly by voice. The TalkingPoint team worked with Kingsbury Court Surgery to integrate all facets of TalkingPoint's speech solutions with their established clinical systems.

This was shortly followed by the first tranche of training, which saw four doctors trained to use TalkingPoint's products.

Doctors at Kingsbury Court now use TalkingPoint predominantly to generate referral letters quickly and efficiently as they can see the results immediately on screen. However, Debbie commented: “One of our GPs regularly uses TalkingPoint to update medical records and to summarise letters onto the patient notes.”

The Practice Management Team is satisfied that this system is offering time and cost savings. “We are still discovering the full potential of TalkingPoint since its installation. As we continue to learn more about TalkingPoint’s capabilities, this will save more time and money.” added Debbie.

User training is essential to maximize the benefits of using speech technologies in primary care. TalkingPoint now offers web based refresher training sessions for all users which are delivered 4-6 weeks after initial installation and training.These flexible and convenient refresher sessions can be called off by GPs as and when they are ready; ensuring users are familiar with all the key TalkingPoint commands.
