Cornwall Pathology deploys TalkingPoint with Dragon Medical One
Cornwall Pathology is now using TalkingPoint's Pathology reporting workflow with Dragon Medical One (DMO).
The Pathology department at Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust (RCHT) has been using TalkingPoint’s reporting workflow automation since 2009. Initially, TalkingPoint provided digital dictation software to upgrade the department from analogue tapes for consultant dictation to digital recordings. TalkingPoint has since deployed the TalkingPoint for Pathology automated workflow with speech recognition for one of RCHT’s Consultant Histopathologists to enable hands-free pathology reporting.
Since deploying TalkingPoint’s speech recognition pathology workflow, the Trust has deployed Dragon Medical One (DMO), Nuance’s flagship cloud speech recognition solution, across the Trust.
TalkingPoint has traditionally utilised Dragon’s Medical Practice Edition (DMPE) speech engine. Matthew Coles, Senior Biomedical Scientist, explains: “Although we wanted to use TalkingPoint’s speech enabled reporting capabilities within the department, with the Trust move to DMO, we believed we would have to continue to use TalkingPoint’s workflow automation without any speech control. However, the TalkingPoint development team have been able to utilise the features within Dragon Medical One to drive speech enabled processes.
Malcolm and the TalkingPoint team went above and beyond, liaising with ORdigiNAL, Nuance’s specialist DMO distributor, and undertaking extensive testing in order to deliver an automated pathology reporting workflow that works seamlessly with Dragon Medical One.”
The Pathology Department at RCHT processes in the region of 36,000 to 40,000 specimens a year and has a team of 8 Consultant Pathologists. Matthew adds: “We are aiming to roll out speech enabled reporting to the whole team as TalkingPoint removes the need to use a mouse and keyboard. For our Consultant Pathologists, instead of having to look down the microscope, turn, type, and return to the microscope, they can simply dictate by voice and let TalkingPoint’s workflow create the report.”
