Royal Lancaster Infirmary trials speech recognition with outstanding results

The use of speech recognition in clinical settings is gaining in momentum, but rarely is the benefit felt within the hospital setting with immediate effect.  In a recent trial in the Radiology department   at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary , the impact of turnaround time has been so significant that other departments within the hospital have been in touch to find out what has made the difference, and to make the Radiology team aware that the improved turnaround times has enabled departments to make more informed clinical decisions that has directly impacted on patient care.

The trial was set up using the highly intuitive TalkingPoint for Radiology that works with the Dragon Professional   speech engine.  The IT team had been trying to get Dragon working successfully over a period of time but had not been able to integrate the software effectively to create smooth workflows.  With the addition of TalkingPoint,  its unique UK English   radiology medical dictionary  and its intuitive radiology reporting workflow system specially tailored for Lancaster's implementation of the HSS CRIS Radiology Information System,  the trial has proven to be a  huge success with the immediate result that the hospital has now formulated a roll-out plan on for wider use within the Trust .

TalkingPoint's success at Lancaster is being attributed by the hospital's key radiology department staff  to its ease of use, the strength of its medical vocabulary, the professional integration of the reporting workflow system,    and the technical support supplied by the TalkingPoint team throughout the implementation.

TalkingPoint is already successfully deployed in a wide range of clinical and administrative areas  in a large number of hospitals throughout the UK.

TalkingPoint for Radiology is fully integrated with a number of RIS applications (inc HSS CRIS, Meditech, I-Soft , McKesson,  Oasis ,  PACSmail ,  etc).

The Royal Lancaster Infirmary is part of the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Trust , whose hospitals also include  the Queen Victoria Hospital Morecambe, Furness General Hospital, and Westmorland General Hospital (Kendal).
