TalkingPoint for Pathology at Royal Hampshire County Hospital, Winchester
TalkingPoint for Pathology, GHG Software’s specialist histopathology reporting speech recognition workflow system now used by 20 NHS Trusts, was first implemented by the Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust’ Royal Hampshire County Hospital, Pathology Department, in 2009.
“We were one of the first users of TalkingPoint for Pathology and have recently upgraded to the latest version. We now have 10 consultants across our Basingstoke and Winchester sites using TalkingPoint and it has been fabulous!” said Hayley Burnley, Consultant Histopathologist.
Continues Hayley: “TalkingPoint for Pathology has short-cuts and voice commands to make the reporting process as fast as possible, and in addition to producing microscopy reports we have started to use TalkingPoint to create post-mortem reports.”
Speech Recognition was identified as the ideal solution to reduce the turnaround time for pathology reports. “Before we used TalkingPoint, we would handwrite onto the back of a card, or dictate our reports into an analogue recorder which was then sent to secretaries to type up. What I love now is the flexibility of using speech recognition; as soon as the slides hit my desk, if I don’t need to perform any extra work on that tissue, I can digitally sign the report out at midnight if I want to. I really like being autonomous and not having to extend the pathway – it is a very lean way of working”
Following a site visit to Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust’ Derriford Hospital, the Hampshire Hospitals pathology team could see the benefits first hand of using TalkingPoint for Pathology in cut-up; an improvement that the Pathology team is in the process of implementing.
